Security researchers have long warned that cloud services were providing cyber-criminals with extensive computing resources that could be used to launch powerful and damaging cyber-attacks. A Kaspersky researcher uncovered an example of how Amazon’s cloud services are being used to spread malware.

A cloud instance on Amazon Web Services had links which pointed to “financial data stealing malware,” Dmitry Bestuzhev, a Kaspersky Lab expert, wrote on the Securelist blog. The malware appears fairly sophisticated, with the capability to block several security programs while stealing hardware and software information.

Kaspersky notified Amazon of the malicious links over the weekend, but a company spokesperson confirmed that as of June 6 the links were still active.

“Unfortunately after my formal complaints to Amazon, and waiting more than 12 hours, all malicious links are still on-line and active!” Bestuzhev wrote.

“I also hope all malicious links will be deactivated by Amazon soon,” Bestuzhev said.

More and more criminals use legitimate cloud services for malicious purposes, Bestuzhev said. There have been several notable examples, such as reports that the unknown attackers who successfully compromised Sony’s PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment in mid-April rented servers from Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute to launch the attack. Academic researchers have also demonstrated how attackers can easily use EC2 and AWS to brute-force passwords.

Cyber-attacks “successfully abuse” legitimate cloud services in most cases, Bestuzhev said.

“I believe legitimate cloud services will continue to be used by criminals for different kinds of cyber-attacks,” Bestuzhev said. It is very cheap to rent cloud servers, with prices ranging from three cents to $2.48 an hour.

The cloud instance hosted “a bunch of different” malicious codes, all of which were downloaded onto the victim’s machine. Some programs acted as a rootkit, looking for and stopping execution of at least four different antivirus programs, including AVG, Avira’s Antivir, ESET and Alwill Software’s Avast applications. The rootkit also looked for and blocked a special security application called GBPluggin, which is used by a number of Brazilian financial institutions to protect online banking transactions.

Even more disconcerting, the attackers had made sure that the malware samples were protected by a legitimate anti-piracy software called The Enigma Protector. The criminals used Enigma Protector to make it harder for security analysts to reverse engineer the malware, Bestuzhev speculated.

The malware is capable of stealing financial information from nine Brazilian and two “international” banks, Bestuzhev said. It also steals machine information, such as the CPU, hard drive volume number and computer name, as these are the types of information being collected by some Latin

Flight search in Google

Google has launched a quick flight lookup tool, allowing users of its search engine to easily find flights to and from various cities in Australia and the world.

The search function works when users of Google type in their current city, flight destination and precede this with the word “flight”, which then brings up the flights available on that day.

Users are also able to type in the name of one city after the word “flight”, with departure information from the one location appearing in the search results.

While the program currently only works with major cities and is in beta, Google has already made it available in 10 languages.

In a blog post from Google, the search engine giant said flight information is one of the most popular things users of Google search for, and that it hoped to expand into more tools in the future.

Users will not be able to log in unless they enter the code and authenticate the device.

Andrew Song, who wrote the blog post about the latest opt-in security feature he has been working on over the last several months, describes “Login Approvals” as a “security feature that requires you to enter a code that we text to your phone when we log in from an unrecognized computer.”

After opting in to the new two factor authentication system, a pop-up box will appear that says “Confirm your phone”, after which a text message will be sent containing a code, which then must be typed into the pop-up box that follows. In order to avoid going through this procedure each time one logs in, the smartphone, PC, or tablet must be designated as a trusted device. Facebook will then allow automatic log-in from the device.

If log-in to a Facebook account is attempted from an unrecognized device, Facebook will send an alert so that the password can be changed. This means that even if someone were to obtain your login and password information, they could not access your account and cause any problems.

“As more individuals and businesses turn to Facebook to share and connect with others, people are looking to take more control over protecting their account from unauthorized access” said Mr. Song, to explain why Facebook has introduced the new security feature.

Meanwhile, giant public relations firm Burson-Marsteller issued a statement saying it should have never agreed to carry out the assignment on Facebook’s behalf, and that it violated its own policies and procedures to do so. Burson confirmed on Thursday that it no longer works for Facebook.

The admissions follow a Tuesday story in USA TODAY detailing how Burson consultants approached top-tier media companies and high-profile technologists, on behalf of an unnamed client, to seed largely unfounded allegations about privacy shortcomings in Google’s Social Circle service. On Thursday, blogger Dan Lyons, of The Daily Beast, broke a story naming Facebook as Burson’s client.

Facebook issued a statement saying no smear campaign was authorized or intended. “We engaged Burson-Marsteller to focus attention on this issue, using publicly available information that could be independently verified by any media organization or analyst,” the statement said. “The issues are serious, and we should have presented them in a serious and transparent way.”

Those developments bring into sharp relief the escalating infighting between high-profile tech companies scratching to extract advertising profits from sensitive information disclosed to them by Internet users.

“This incident brings light to a number of issues: disclosure, privacy and ethics among them,” says Rosanna Fiske, CEO of the Public Relations Society of America. “It’s time for the technology companies to put aside their competitive drives to one-up each other and consider the consumer and the broader public, who deserve accurate and truthful information.”

Facebook’s engagement of Burson actually derives from a long-running feud between Facebook and Google. Up until last November, Facebook took advantage of Google’s more open policies by letting Facebook users automatically populate their Friends lists with all of their Gmail contacts.

Then, Google began to block that practice, insisting that Facebook remove its restriction on letting Facebook users export their Friends list to their Gmail accounts.

Facebook quickly retaliated by supplying its users with a manual way to move their Gmail contacts into their Facebook accounts.

Google countered by breathing new life into an obscure service, Social Circle, which first appeared in October 2009. Designed to help Gmail account holders find public Web content from the people they know, the service prompts Gmailers to connect Facebook and other Web accounts to their Google profiles. Google then mines all public parts of those accounts for new acquaintances; it then connects secondary contacts culled from the other Web accounts to the Gmail user’s direct contacts.

To one-up Facebook, Google last February added to Social Circle a feature that tries to guess whether a particular Gmail user also holds other Web accounts — including Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn and Twitter — and then prompts the user to connect those account to his or her Gmail account. Facebook countered by hiring Burson to spread privacy fears about Social Circle.

“Google wants Facebook data, and Facebook wants some of the Google data, too,” says Kevin Lee, CEO of online advertising consultancy DidIt. “Now the gloves are off. It’s fascinating that a top five PR firm would find itself tempted to engage in this kind of guerilla PR.”

Burson issued a brief statement asserting that it should have turned down the job. According to the statement, the whisper campaign “was not at all standard operating procedure and is against our policies, and the assignment on those terms should have been declined. When talking to the media, we need to adhere to strict standards of transparency about clients, and this incident underscores the absolute importance of that principle.”

Google declined to comment.

The apologies set off a firestorm of discussion in the tech and PR communities.

“How on earth could this make sense for a company that stresses transparency as Facebook does?” says Paul Argenti, a professor at Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business. “Responsibility goes all the way up to the CEO.”

Jonathan Mayer, researcher at the Stanford Center for Internet and Society, notes that Facebook, at the moment, is highly motivated to keep Google from intruding on its turf. “It’s no secret that Google is gearing up to go social in a big way,” Mayer says. “Facebook, of course, wants to be the dominant social platform.”

“It’s a little amusing that companies are trying to get each other in trouble over privacy,” says Marc Rotenberg, president of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. “It would be better if they would deal with their own privacy problems.”

Google's platform extends its reach with Android@Home

At its I/O developer conference on Tuesday, Google showed a sneak preview of its Android@Home project, which will extend the Android platform into household objects. That means some day in the future, you could control home appliances—your dishwasher, the heating system, the lights in your house—using your Android device as a remote control.

“Think of your phone as the nucleus that this all started with,” said Google engineering director Joe Britt in an interview. “We’re opening the platform up to everyone to do whatever they can imagine.”

Little detail was given, but Google explains it has essentially created a framework to control wireless communication between objects in your house. During a keynote presentation, Britt demonstrated this wireless communication using a Motorola Xoom tablet to control stage lights created by Google’s first officially announced partner, Lighting Science.

For Google, the Android@Home project is a first step into “the internet of things,” a term used to describe the growing trend of manufacturers producing intelligent, connected objects. Major tech companies like ARM Holdings and Hewlett-Packard have long since been involved in this space, from providing cheap microcontrollers and toolkits to hobbyists and engineers, to creating wireless sensor systems that measure seismic activity. In essence, projects like these ultimately aim to turn “dumb” or unconnected objects into “smart” (connected) ones.

“We want to think of every appliance in your home as a potential I/O device,” Britt said during the keynote presentation.

This type of wireless communication between devices already exists—commonly networked “smart buildings” often involve temperature monitors and lighting fixtures.

But Google says Android@Home cuts some of the expenses often associated with existing wireless monitoring systems. And according to Google engineering director of hardware Matt Hershenson, the project will open up possibilities of creating smart appliances to developers that otherwise wouldn’t have the chance.

In addition to the Android@Home preview, Google also debuted Android Open Accessory support. This allows external hardware, like a mouse or an XBox controller, to interact with your Android-powered device. If you want to attach an accessory that requires an app in order to function, you’ll be directed to the Android Market to download the app. USB support is currently available, and Bluetooth support is expected to come in the future.

Android Open Accessory is built in to Android 3.1 “Honeycomb”—which was released to Xoom tablet owners this morning—as well as Android 2.3.4 “Gingerbread.”

To spur the development of further peripherals able to interact with Android devices, Google handed out hundreds of Accessory Developer Kits (ADKs), which included hardware based on the highly popular Arduino platform.

The Arduino hardware platform is an ideal choice for Google’s extension of Android into physical computing. It’s very popular in the open-source hardware modification community due to its relative inexpensiveness, ease of use for beginners, and most importantly, its freely available software tools.

Tuesday’s announcements hint at Google’s larger vision for the platform: to spread Android’s reach across myriad devices and multiple industries.

“As an open platform,” said Google director of product management Hugo Barra, “Android was always meant to go well beyond the mobile phone.”

Or perhaps Android chief Andy Rubin said it best In a press conference on Tuesday: “Everything should be Android-ified.”
